Floors:
- Easy care – probably not carpet
- No rugs on floor (trip hazards)
Bathrooms: (close to bedroom)
- Space to manoeuvre crutches, walker, wheelchair
- Shower with no shower doors (Piece of glass/Perspex only)
- Tap design
- Removable shower hose rather than above head fixture.
- Non-skid tiles
- Toilet: in the bathroom
- High pan toilet (19 inches versus 15 inches)
- Facilities for rails (not yet!)
Bedroom:
- Bed high enough, firm enough to get in and out of (not too high, not too low)
- Sliding door cupboards
- Maybe usual door for bedroom door
- Accessible power sockets
Kitchen design: (accessibility)
- Drawers in kitchen not cupboards
- Taps
- Restrict/avoid high cabinets – access via a step ladder is a falls risk
- Kitchen hot plates and raised oven (access, avoid bending/lifting from a low oven)
- Microwave accessible height
- 2 drawer dishwashers (so can be a waist height)
- Easy access to toaster, kettle
- Bottom mount fridge
Lounge:
- Furniture high enough
- Reduce clutter (trip hazard)
- Accessible power sockets
- Space for a small exercise area: weights or resistance training
Laundry:
- Accessible with inside drying area
- Easy access to ironing board
Garage:
- Easy access to house and kitchen
- Remote control garage door
Garden:
- Low maintenance garden – small trees, shrubs
- High maintenance garden - vegetables, flowers - raised garden beds to hip height - width 1 metre, access both sides
